We’ll never learn….
…or at least the so-called experts never learn. We continue to be surprised by the number of people who tell us they’ve stopped eating meat for health reasons. Wooz still tries to set the record straight; I’ve given up. And these same people, and for health reasons, will go vegetarian, vegan or eat diet foods containing chemicals guaranteed to poison! We’re reminded of that by a blurb in Kit Pharo’s recent newsletter. Imagine you’ve got a group of men who’ve survived a heart attack. They agree to participate in a four-year-long experiment where they’re placed onto one of two diets: Diet One is a “Mediterranean Diet” high in fruits, vegetables,…

The fox guarding the hen house….
….that would be the USDA, of course. The Department of Agriculture has been untiring (despite the image of bureaucrats) in pushing genetically-modified food onto an unsuspecting public. Wordlwide, we’re in the forefront in the production of GM food-stuffs, largely because the rest of the world has reservations about its safety. But in the US, the government using selected experts and cooked research studies, has conspired with Big Ag to flood our fields and supermarkets with what may be a ticking time-bomb. The organic people, and food safety experts, have tried to push back, but it’s a feeble effort. http://ca.news.yahoo.com/organic-farmers-condemn-u-report-claim-favors-gmo-191139293.html The rationale, of course, is lower cost-greater production-higher profits. And until recently…

Forget Democrats and Republicans….
….vote for the Dinner Party. Well, in California anyway, where there’s one of those propositions on the ballot which challenges genetically modified foods and the unholy alliance between Big Ag and Big Government. Michael Pollan recently wrote an article about it in the New York Times magazine. Here’s the link: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/14/magazine/why-californias-proposition-37-should-matter-to-anyone-who-cares-about-food.html?_r=1

Sure hope this doesn’t jinx it but….
….wrapped up my annual physical yesterday and got a clean bill of health. Well, as clean as it can for someone closing in on his 78th birthday. The doctor is very aware of our interest in grass fed beef and so he’s been tracking certain indicators very carefully. One, my cholesterol levels, has come down from dangerously high levels five years ago to where it is now firmly in the normal range. More interesting is a new test he used for the first time: a kind of ultra-sound of the arteries in the neck. The test reveals the condition not only of the arteries but the heart and can be…

We get letters….
….whenever we send out our latest boxes of beef and pork. Those who are new to Thistle Hill meat apparently never quite believe what we’ve been saying: not only is it healthy but it’s delicious. Here’s an email we just received about our PorkPak from Susan B.: We are so enjoying the pork we purchased from you. I have made the sausage as well as the bratwurst. Both were absolutely delicious. We were wondering if you might have more of the bratwurst for sale? We would love to have it at a family get-together ~and keep some in the freezer for later use. Definitely keep us on your mailing list…

Rub a little dirt in it….
….or better yet eat it. I’ve read things like this before, but never in so august a journal as the New York Times. Turns out those chemicals we spray on things or rub on our hands to prevent disease are (guess what) leaving us more vulnerable to disease. Microbes may cause disease but it’s also microbes that fight the bad bugs and you don’t want to wipe them out. Here’s a link to the full story: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/21/opinion/lets-add-a-little-dirt-to-our-diet.html?_r=2&emc=eta1&utm_source=August+2012+Enews&utm_campaign=FCA+August+2012+Enews&utm_medium=email This isn’t exactly a scientific breakthrough. I remember some years back (okay, like maybe 50) when as horrified parents we saw one of our progeny eating dirt and ran to the pediatrician. Compounding…

All that glitters….
….could be natural fly control. At least that’s what our friend and holistic vet Sue Beal thinks. I’ve been away on business all week and returned to find an email from Sue to some kindred spirits suggesting her “horse-y” buddies are doing “crafty” things to chase flies. But let Sue tell it: Weeeelllll, I spoke to some colleagues who work in the horse world a week or so ago and they recounted a series of reports and on farm experiences using glitter (you know, sparkle dust, craft glitter…..) on horses as an effective fly repellent. Apparently the flies see the glitter as some sort of predator beast and avoid the animal. So,…

Once more with feeling…
….we were at a party last night where, once more, someone in one of the conversation circles, announced her family “just doesn’t eat much red meat anymore”. Not a vegetarian exactly, you understand, just would rather not eat much red meat. Because I was a guest (and off-duty), I again let the remark pass. I did not tell the lady that the chicken and pork she was feeding her family was a whole lot worse for them than red meat. But still, despite all the evidence, it’s my impression that most of the experts today are still cautioning against “too much”, whatever that is, red meat. We’ve linked to various…

Et tu, NIH?
One of the rewards of what we do is talking to our friends and neighbors as they get their latest grass fed beef and pork fix. There were a couple of those conversations yesterday. One about the federal study that says the low carb diet is best for losing weight after all….and another with a woman who says she depends on the perfect fats in grass fed beef to supply just the right amount of fat she needs. We’ve ranted here before about the nonsense masquerading as science that comes out of not only the government but the medical industry. Anyone for the food pyramid? Now, though, this latest study…

If you can’t beat them, buy them….
We’ve made the point before that the organic label has been seriously corrupted. Big agriculture industry giants (Big Ag) have infiltrated the organic field and, with their accomplices in government, are doing all they can to blur the differences between our contaminated supermarket food supply and safe food. Again, Democrats and Republicans alike in Washington are the culprits in this story. You would think, of course, that “organic” means entirely natural; it grows and we eat it unadulterated except for what we may add as we prepare it. Well, that’s not true. Something like 300 additives, some carcinogenic, have already been cleared by the “watchdog” government agency for use in organic food…
