In case you’re wondering….
….how the kids from St. Issey C of E Primary School did at the Wadebridge Primestock Show at the Royal Cornwall grounds…. THEY WON! We knew they would. Thanks to Cornwall Bureau Chief Juliet Cleave for the picture.

On the job training….
….”Pokey” went for her herding class yesterday and did quite well. Monroe is a great trainer but somehow I think the lessons that stick come from Mom. Cornwall’s Juliet Cleave saw this at the “World of Woof”.

A few of my favorite…..
….People! My mate, Ivan Rowe, braving a gale to judge a Devon show at Camelford, England recently. The steward for the show was our Cornwall lass, Juliet Cleave. Our English project is all the stronger for the fact that four of our seven partners have been judges in Devon circles for many years. If Ivan tells you a cow is “fit”, take it to the bank. It’s an integrity he took to people judging too, as a former Queen’s magistrate.

It may not be Shakespeare but….
….our Cornwall society correspondent sends us news of two young lovers, Rupert and Clare. Seriously, this simple news article (thanks to Juliet Cleave) shows exactly why we love southwest England. It’s more than the cows. It’s the people….the people we once were. http://www.fwi.co.uk/articles/17/10/2013/141594/rural-romance-heart-of-the-countryside-rupert-and.htm

Sometimes it just doesn’t work (2)….
….the day wasn’t going too well for this Border Collie either. They never told him that not all sheep have read the same manual as the dogs. Thanks to our Cornwall lass Juliet Cleave. We “lifted” the picture from her Facebook page. (click to enlarge)

A Cornwall post card….
….one of our English friends and colleague, Juliet Cleave, has entered this picture (and others) in a British post card contest. As always, she has a way of making us feel “home sick”. The shepherd here is Juliet’s husband, Chris. We have to get back to Cornwall in the Spring!

The “proper Devon”…continued….
….is “Lord Wolseley”, the champion bull at the Royal Agricultural Society’s Jubilee Show in 1889. Bred by Viscount Falmouth, himself, and sold to a farm in Devon. Click to enlarge and thanks again to Juliet Cleave.

The “proper Devon”….
….this is one you’ll have to click on to see the full picture. And sadly, this heifer’s identify is lost. No name, no date. But from the “feel”, I’m guessing it was taken about 1920. On the other hand, the halter hardware would seem to make it a bit later than that. This is the latest in a series of old photos uncovered by our friend and partner in Cornwall, Juliet Cleave of Kew herd.

The “proper Devon”….
….another picture of Devon in the days of yore. This is Highfield Noble and his picture was published in 1918 in a publication called “Livestock of the Farm”. This is one of a half dozen pictures we’ll be posting of Traditional English Devon. We’re indebted to Juliet Cleave of Cornwall.

What does the “proper” Devon look like…
….well, this is what a “good one” looked like 120 years ago. She’s Flower the 2nd, winner of the Gold Medal from the Royal Agricultural Society in 1889. Her breeder was Sir William Williams, Baronet, of Heanton, Barnstaple. There’s an on-going debate within the two Devon associations over breed “standards” but we think this female could well be the model. (click to enlarge) Thanks to Juliet Cleave of Cornwall, one of our English partners in Traditional Devon America, for the picture. She sent along a string of old pictures which we’ll be posting in coming days.
