Now about Senepol…

Back in the beginning, when we were deciding on the breed that would do best in our area and provide the best meat, we considered not only Devon, our eventual choice, but Senepol.  And here is our newest calf from a Senepol mama, born yesterday.  She has a Devon daddy and we’ve found the cross between the two to be just about ideal.

They are the steer of choice for many of our customers who are in the meat business.  The Amish in Pennsylvania are particularly fond of them and report they get sensational carcass yields from our Thistle Hill crosses.

And here’s another Thistle Hill baby once removed.  This Devon bull calf was just born at Rich and Kristi Hamilton’s Elm Spring Farms in southern Virginia.  They’re excited and we are, too.  Both Dad and Dam were purchased at Thistle Hill.  The Hamiltons are in the meat business, for sure!

And one more word about the Senepol breed, a cow that most people have never heard of; not even some experts.  The Senepol is a cow that was developed in St. Croix about 100 years ago.  It has African roots, does exceedingly well in the heat and there is none better in converting minimum forage to delicious beef.  We bought our first Senepol from Teddy Gentry of Alabama country music fame.  Teddy and Wooz and I were all a bit worried about bringing Senepol this far north.  They don’t have a very thick hair coat.  But after the first winter, they have adapted well and have been such a joy, and such contributors, that we’ve kept them all.
