Tummy-aches….

20130612_5….I’ve been feeling for some time that the recent group of pigs that we’ve been fattening were better-behaved than some in the past.  Truthfully, when pigs get about this size, I am on guard.  They’re powerful enough to knock you down.  And they’ve staggered me several times.

Certainly, the pigs have been rough on each other as well.  But our newer animals have not been as rambunctious.  In fact, I commented to Wooz the other day that I thought the pigs actually seemed happier.

I credited it to our new suppliers, Deb and Curry Parker; and their daily contact with new piglets is probably part of the reason.  But now there’s a study that may also help explain what I’m seeing….

Put briefly:  until now, our pigs have had tummy aches because they ate genetically modified corn and soybeans.  By coincidence, we switched to non-GMO feed at the same time we switched to the Parkers as the source for our piglets.

Here’s the report on the study:

Thanks to Dr. Sue Beal for the link.

Pigs, of course, have stomachs somewhat similar to the human stomach.  Makes sense to us that if genetically modified feed can do that to a pig’s stomach, it is probably causing trouble in the human digestive system.  If you’re eating supermarket food, including the meat, you can be sure you’re eating GM products.

Thistle Hill cows eat grass….period!  Our pigs eat grass….and non-GMO feed….period!  No one gets antibiotics, hormones, chemicals of any kind….ever.
